Is My Navel Suitable for a Piercing?

Navel Piercing Suitability:

One of the most common misconceptions we see in the piercing industry is the idea that navel suitability can be determined by a single factor or that a floating navel is always the "best" option for those that don’t seem to fit the mould of traditional.

The reality is far more nuanced.

Navel piercing suitability depends on a combination of anatomy, jewellery design, lifestyle, tissue quality, and how the jewellery interacts with an individual's unique anatomy.

This client came to us after being advised elsewhere that they were only suitable for a floating navel piercing and could not wear a traditional curved barbell.

After assessing their anatomy, we found that they were actually very well suited to a traditional navel piercing and not a floating navel.

The issue wasn't the curved barbell itself - it was the jewellery shape being considered.

Not All Navels Are the Same

One of the biggest mistakes people make is assuming navels are a standard shape.

They aren't.

Just as no two ears are identical, no two navels are identical. The shape, depth, folds, contours, and tissue distribution vary significantly from person to person.

In this client's case, the right side of the navel featured a subtle inward mound. While this may seem like a small detail, it plays an important role when selecting jewellery.

A large round gemstone placed against this area would likely create ongoing pressure. Over time, that pressure could contribute to irritation, migration, off-centre healing, or even rejection.

Instead, a pear-shaped gem was selected.

Why Jewellery Shape Matters

When viewed from the front, the jewellery aligns beautifully with the client's anatomy.

When viewed from the side, there is a small amount of clearance between the jewellery and the inward mound, meaning there is no unnecessary pressure being applied to the tissue.

The pear shape naturally follows the contour of the navel rather than fighting against it.

In many ways, jewellery selection is simply about matching shapes. Different anatomy suits different jewellery, and understanding those relationships is often the difference between a comfortable, successful piercing and one that struggles to heal.

The Floating Navel Trend

Floating navels have become incredibly popular in recent years, and for good reason. They can be an excellent option for many clients.

However, the current popularity of floating navels has created the misconception that they are the solution for every anatomy type or that anyone who doesn't suit a traditional navel must automatically have a floating navel instead.

That's simply not true.

A floating navel is an alternative solution for some, not a universal answer.

The goal should always be to choose the jewellery style that best suits the individual's anatomy rather than following trends.

Anatomy Changes Over Time

Another important factor to remember is that anatomy is not static.

We regularly see navel anatomy change due to:

  • Puberty
  • Age
  • Pregnancy
  • Weight fluctuations
  • Fitness and lifestyle changes
  • Changes in posture and body composition

Because of this, being unsuitable for a navel piercing today does not necessarily mean you will be unsuitable forever.

In many cases, a client may not currently have the anatomy required for a safe and successful navel piercing, but six months or a few years later their anatomy may be completely different.

This is why we often encourage clients to return for reassessment in the future.

When we determine that someone isn't currently suitable, we also explain what anatomical features we're looking for and whether those factors may change over time.

It's Not About Weight

One of the most persistent myths surrounding navel piercings is that suitability is determined by body size or weight.

In reality, weight is rarely the deciding factor.

When assessing navel anatomy, we're looking at features such as:

  • The upper navel fold / lip
  • The natural curve of the navel
  • The opening of the navel
  • How the tissue behaves while standing, sitting, and moving
  • How jewellery will interact with the anatomy long-term

These factors tell us far more about suitability than a number on a scale ever could.

At Cherrycore, our goal isn't simply to determine whether a client can have a navel piercing. Our goal is to determine which jewellery style will give them the best chance of long-term success, comfort, and stability.

Just like all piercings, navel piercings don't have a one-size-fits-all jewellery option.
